A Garden Sanctuary
Over an acre of peaceful beauty
The gardens at Old Monterey Inn are nothing short of enchanting. Spanning over an acre of beautifully landscaped grounds, our gardens have been lovingly maintained since this historic estate was first built in 1929, when Carmel and Lydia Martin envisioned a property that would reflect the timeless beauty of the English countryside.
Stroll along winding stone pathways beneath a canopy of towering Monterey Pines, California Live Oaks, and majestic Redwoods — some 100 trees grace the property in all. Discover hidden garden alcoves perfect for quiet reflection, romantic moments, or simply savoring the beauty of nature with a glass of wine in hand.
A Garden for Every Season
Throughout the year, our gardens offer an ever-changing tapestry of color and fragrance. English roses climb along trellises and garden walls, while seasonal blooms — from camellias and azaleas to hydrangeas and lavender — fill the air with their sweet perfume. The soothing sounds of trickling water fountains provide a peaceful soundtrack as you wander through the grounds.
Your Private Garden Retreat
Our gardens are not just for admiring — they are for living in. Enjoy your gourmet breakfast al fresco among the profusion of flowers. Take your evening wine and hors d'oeuvres to a secluded garden bench. Curl up with a good book in one of our charming sitting areas, surrounded by fairytale-like landscaping. Or simply sit quietly and watch the hummingbirds and butterflies that call our gardens home.
A Storied Landscape
Much of the original stonework from the 1929 estate still remains, lending an air of history and permanence to the grounds. The gardens have been featured on the Today Show, recognized by Condé Nast Traveler, and selected by Patricia Schulz for her celebrated book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. They also serve as a breathtaking backdrop for intimate weddings and elopements at our Monterey bed and breakfast.

A Peaceful Retreat
Whether you are an avid gardener, a nature lover, or simply someone seeking a peaceful escape, the gardens at Old Monterey Inn invite you to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the beauty of the natural world.
